Acacia senegal is a large drought resistant tree native to the African grassland savanna that bears yellow or cream coloured flowers which produce large seed pods.
After the rainy season, sap begins to ooze from the trunk of the tree. The acacia gum is collected from December to June is used to make Gum Arabic. Acacia was considered to be sacred by the Ancient Hebrews.
Gum Arabic is used in making medicine and as a flavouring in certain soda pop. It has been historically used to make a cream for skin inflammations, ailments of the respiratory and urinary tracts, coughs, sore throats, eyewash, diarrhea, and dysentery.
